Newbie Grizzly Questions
#1
Hi all!! I should be getting my new 05 Camo Grizz 660 in early next week. I have a couple of questions, as I haven't had a quad since back in 2000. As far as Break-In, what are the recommendations?? What type of fuel? Regular old unleaded? Any other advice???

I just did what the owners manaul recomends for break in. As for fuel the manual recomends regular but i run premium because it burns cleaner inside the cylinder. I'm installing a 11:1 piston next week in the grizz so I'll see if it looks good or not.

Really, so your multi million dollar research and development team has figured it out. I guess Yamaha needed to fill some space in there owners manual because by your opinion they are wrong. LMAO

I used this method on my 2005 Grizz and I'm very happy with the results thus far
The biggest thing to worry about is changing that Oil out several times, I changed my oil at 20 miles, 60 miles then 200 miles then 500 miles then 700 miles.
The grizz is fast, so far the other Grizz's I ride with 2003, 2004 and another I think 2003 grizz doesn't have quit the poop mine does
I ran all RPM's during break-in, but not for extended times and only after a good warmup, I accelerated up hills at full throttle then came back down the hills on compression. I did short bursts off full throttle and never ever ran the same RPM for more than a few seconds, when riding down the county road for several miles I always changed the RPM's and didn't run the same RPM/Speed.

In all likelyhood.,you wont own this quad for more than 1000 hours, so how you break it in is moot. 90% of all quads are resold in the first 5 years.Just drive it like it was already broke in.
If you baby it...youll just be selling a cherry quad when your done with it.
If you beat the snot out of it, youll be selling a slightly more used quad, but youll have had a lot more fun.
Either way, youre gonna get the same money for a cherry quad as a beat one.

Thanks guys. I actually took it out and gave it the first 2-3 hours and about 14 miles yesterday. I basically did what's mentioned in that website. I'm also a firm believer in the "don't baby it" theory. You have to WOT it here and there as long as it's not for prolonged periods of time. And as long as you don't keep it at certain steady rpms you're good. It seems like that holds true for anything new, be it cars, boats etc....
After riding it yesterday a bit, all I can say is DAMN that is bad machine. Going up a steep rocky road it just eats it up and begs for more, doesn't even breathe. Also on bumps that IRS really takes the beating instead of the rider!
