My friend and I were riding this weekend, when 10 miles in his Sportsman 500HO Shifter got stuck in reverse. It was funny at the time because he had to ride all the way home backwards on rocky trails and deep muddy water.

Now the hard question, how do we fix it?

No the SP is not under warranty. WHen you say your linkage is off, do you mean it needs to be adjusted? Because its jamed, you could only move it a quarter inch each way.

I would suggest you pull the right side panel and look to see if anything is binding. Then, with the machine off, rock the machine forward and backward and try moving the shifter at the same time. You may have a tranny problem if stuck in reverse. When the machines are new, they are hard to shift for a bit, but since this is used, you could have some serious problems. Try the rocking and see if you can free the shift lever...if not, dealer time.

Yes, I tryed to rock it loose, but nothing. The hole shifter stinks, we lost low gear a year ago, now this!

700 miles and changed the engine oil once is fine, I'm talking about the tranny fluid...but then again i think Polaris recommends every 1000 miles or once a year if less than that many miles....depends on the conditions that are ridden in,....if its extremely hot riding and slow going causing the unit to work hard, fluids will break down...

let us know what you find out
