Yeah, if you are riding slow, like under 7 mph or somehting for a while, he should use low, but since he doesn't have low, he should try to avoid riding at low speeds for a long time. As for the shifter, I hope it's just some binding in the linkage. I'd take it apart and see if it is just that.

Default *SP HELP*

take off the side panel and take the linkage off on both bars.....when they are off it will free up as soon as you move the shift handle. I have had it happen once and now i carry one extra wrench to get the fittings off.It will be fine after this!Mine hasnt done it again in 800 kms!
