Lt50 Gearing

Default Lt50 Gearing

My young son has started riding our old Suzuki LT50. The problem is that as the bike is getting a little tired the throttle limiter has to be out a little further than I would like to be able to haul him off from a standstill - but once it gets going it is faster than I want. I thought about buying new front and rear sprockets to give it more go initially but to lower the top speed. Has anyone done this and if so where can i get the parts?

Try going to a larger rear sprocket. WRH Racing should be able to help you or direct you to someone who can. My son rode an lt 50 for awhile, so I know what youre going through.

Standard bike has 37 teeth rear sprocket. Have just ordered a 43 teeth one to lower the gearing which should solve the low speed pickup/high speed problem.

That should be a good start. If you need a little more, go one tooth smaller in the front. Hopefully you will have enough chain slack to run the bigger sprocket. You may want to look into removing ( if you havent already ) the exhaust restrictor. When I removed ours it gave the bike a lot more low end power. The difference to the over all preformance with it and the carb restrictor removed was night and day.

When you say carb restricto do you mean the one in the intake and if so did you have to put a larger main jet in?

I'm having a heck of a time finding anyone that carries sprockets for these little things...
I tried to contact WRH but no luck.

I have the same problem of sluggish takeoff, and way too fast on the top end. Gearing would make a huge difference if I could just find a parts supplier.

Any ideas?

you would want to try sprocket specialists.com 1-800-782-8200 they can make the rear sprocket for you for about 35.00 dollars. for more take off you would want to go bigger in rear

suzuki / kawi 110's use the same rear sprockets on the "older" 84-87 LT50's, thats what we run. Also remove the pilot jet restrictor .38 size that piggy backs the stock sized 15 pilot. I have my boys race bike (86 LT50) on C-12 race fuel with motul 800 mixed at 40:1, 15 pilot, 67.5 main jet, 2.5 turns out on the screw. Gearing varries from 11-16 on the counter shaft to 33-37 on the rear. It has a uni filter and a Graydon pipe. This little bike rips!
