Default sp 700 backfire

Hello I purchased a used sp 700 (2002) and it runs great but the fan seems to come on very fast and it backfires when you let off the throttle. Does this sound like a carb problem, or is it just normal for this bike? Thanks

It sounds like it might be a little lean.

Don't worry about the fan running alot they all do that and as far as the backfireing drop the clip on the pilot needle a notch or two and try it....

My fan on my '05 700 EFI doesn't come on alot, except after running slow for awhile in hot weather...definitely sounds like it is running lean. Move the needle up (move the clip down) if it has and adjustable needle (jet kit) or change to a slightly larger main jet....could be a combination of both, you'll have to play.

My fan comes on often, especially when idling and going slow. It never backfires.

Thanks for the replies, I was thinking it was lean also, guess that's why it runs so strong!! I'll probably just spring for a Dynojet kit and K&N if I'm going to be playing with it anyways.

The heel clicker clutch IMO is the best clutch kit out there. It grabs the belt better for less belt slip and is by far the best mod I have done to my 700. Its also adjustible for different riding situations. Before I had the high lifter super duty clutch in It works good for mudding but I like the heel clicker much better. The modified stock exhaust is where I cut the back out of my stock exhaust and welded a down pipe for more flow. Its just a little louder that stock I had a AAEN slip on and it was to loud. The reverse light is a fog light I got over at our garage hooked it up where it only comes on when I pull it in reverse just like a truck or car. The 04.5 fender flares I ordered from the dealer they bolted right up to the 03. You can look at my pics and see the modified exsaust and other mods.
