Default Hotcam, Stage 1 or Stage 2 ???

Okay, i have a 04 400ex with the stock bore. I have done the normal pipe (slip on) jetted air filter etc. I am looking to get a new cam but i cant decide if i should get the stage 1 or the stage 2 hotcam. The reason i am leaning toward the stage 2 is bc i will soon be pitting in a high compression piston maybe 11:1 with the stock bore i belive, might go up one size in the bore. So if i get the stage 2 will it be okay to run with a stock motor or will i be better off getting the stage 1. I mostly trail ride and drag/play race. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

I wouldn't put a Stage 2 in a stock motor. If you want a Stage 2, I'd wait till you done the other mods.

Thanks for your reply. What about the stage 1 with a stock motor? Will i be able to tell a difference in power with just the stage 1 hotcam? And if so how much? Also i plan on going with a wiseco 11:1 comp stock bore piston, sometime after the first of the year. Will the stage 1 cam work with this piston?

Yeah, It works good in a stock motor ( I have one in mine). Low end is better than even before whether it be climbing hills, trail riding, or drag racing. It will still work fine with the mods you want to do also.
As for your extended warrantee I don't know how it would effect it. If it were me, I'd do it anyway.............

Thanks for the info. i will go ahead and order the stage 1 hotcam and do it myself, heck with the dealership, I dont trust there work. Had several bad experences with them. Also will i need a new head gasket or will i be able to reuse the old one? And just to make sure, in your opinion was it worth the time and effort to put in the stage 1 cam. And can you really tell a big diff in the power? Thanks again.

I have the same mods you have now but with the cam. Mine runs good I have no problems running with piped Zs. I did all my mods at once so I can't say for sure that the cam is responseable for everything but I'm sure its got a big part of it.
Btw!.........Why do you have a 14T sprockett? bigger tires?

Go with the stage one hot cam. that is what i have on my 2002 416ex with 11:1 piston and it runs just as good as any 440 stage two quad. In fact if there is a 440ex that could beet my 416 on pump gas i will be very suprised.

i have a stage 1 forsale. pm if interested. the stage 1 produces all around power where the stage 2 shines in the high rpms. i would not recommend the stage 2 for trails. however, if you are constantly bouncing off the rev limiter the stage 2 might suit you better.

Thanks again for all the help. I really apreciate it. I have the 14 tooth sprocket on bc i wanted more bottom end power. I mean i know that's what the 400ex is know for but i just wanted a lil more. And i love it. Also i drag raced a 2005 400ex (have new gearing for 05) and the new bike has even more down bottom then i do with the 14 tooth sproket. I could not believe how quick it was but even with the 14t i still had more on top. But thanks again. I will order the stage one cam today. Also do i need a new head gasket?
