What part of So. Calif. you in??? There are literally thousands of places to ride! We have a small group that does more hard-core utility riding, and in general we tend to look for the more technical stuff, that can't be ridden on a sport bike. We also ride/camp with a larger group that is more family oriented (casual pace), and has a mix of sport and ute quads, motorcycles, Pilots, carts, etc. And, another group of hard-core desert sport bike riders (some of the adults/older kids from the "family" group).
Anybody is welcome to join us on any ride! We tend to do an overnight camping trip at least once a month, and there is a day ride going on almost every weekend. (Doing a kids snow ride this weekend in the San Bernardino Mtns.)
I personally tend to ride sport bikes in the desert during the cool months, and utilities in the local mountains and Sierra/Inyos during the hot months (particularly like the Bishop/Mammoth/Owens Valley area). For me, a ute is just a "go anywhere sport bike", for when the rocks get to big or the snow gets to deep. So, I tend to prefer the smaller, lighter machines, and even the 2wds. I particularly like exploring old mines, but I tend to prefer light and fast day rides from a base camp, vs. loading the bike down with a bunch of heavy gear, that destroys handling.
You might be interested in exploring some of these.....

I don't know this group or any of these people, but you might want to check them out....
