Oil Cooler Question - Just curious...
#1
Just a curious question here. I was wondering if anyone had tried this or if it would even work.
Can you add a second (or a larger) oil cooler to a Recon? There appears to be enough room for a second one in there. My buddy has a Rancher AT and his cooler appears to be larger than the recon cooler, and his has a fan on it too. It got me thinking...
My thoughts are this: #1 More oil in the engine, and #2 More cooling capacity fo the oil. My concerns would be this: #1 Would it cause a drop in oil pressure that might lead to problems, and #2 would it block or preheat the cool air headed for the cylinder?
I prefer reliablity over performance, so I was just curious if 2 quarts of cooler oil would be better than 1.5 quarts of warmer oil.
Any thoughts or ideas?

i haven't heard of this done on a recon. you could try it though.

Cooler oil is not always better. Oil getting above 212 degrees (f) is what "cooks" off the moisture that develops in motor oil (from heating an cooling cycles)and also vaporizes many of the bad things that are suspended in oil and not trapped bgy the filter. Having oil that is too cool may not be as bad as too hot, but is not necessarily good.
As for blocking air flow, the engine needs all the air flow it can get but the number one function of the oil is to cool the engine and despite that fact that many of these engines are "air" cooled, the engine oil is what really gets most of the job done.
If you live in a very hot climate and operate under severe conditions such as slow speeds, heavy loads, etcetera, then by all means go with an adidtional cooler, but thermostatically controlled valving is definately the way to go.
As for pressure, it may take a fraction of a second or maybe even a full second for the pressure to initially develop but if the system is intact and secure, you will have all the pressure that the pump can make and regulator valve will allow.

Engine oil is designed to temperature specifications that include ideal operating temps, in addition to max temp. I wouldn't add additional cooling capacity as your oil might not achieve ideal operating temperature.
