I've got the Garman Etrex Legend , with a bike handle bar mount it clips into & it works great.

Hello paulzaho. I have a Garmin GPS II+. It is an older GPS that I have used for years while traveling, sledding and boating. I mounted it using a Ram mount onto the center plastic piece on my handle bars. It has a number of useful statistics like speed, peak speed, odometer and a plotting function that shows a trace of my route as I drive. I use this feature to compare the trace against a trail map shape to determine where I am. It is capable of recording about 250 miles of trails using this trace function. I hook it to an RS232 port on a laptop when we are traveling to see our position on mapping software. There are more sophisticated mapping GPSs on the market now-a-days. My next GPS will be something like a Garmin 276 that I can download terrain maps on. Off hand, I don't know if anyone has ATV trails for down load. Maybe someone else chan chime in if they have seen anything like that. Hope this helps. Have a great holiday.

My Garman can load topographic maps & you could chart trailis on them & save them onto a pc.

I'm a GPS fanatic, I've owned every manufacturers GPSs, even used the Govt.s latest fielded unit....too big for purposes.....I use only Garmin's GPS's now....I have the 60C, Etrex Vista and eMap.....

I have Mapsource, which I can download all topo's, or Metroguide and Roads and Recreation...

the best thing I like about the Garmin over other units, its the best at locking on satellites...

Hey Don49 and elkbow, have you guys ever used the Garmin topo maps? Which ones are better, the US topo or the National forest topos? Thanks, BryceGTX

 

the United States Topo's are better. They are made from the actual 7.5' topo's....so if you have the 7.5' maps, they are correlated....

Thanks guys. Do you guys use the topo charts when you are on the trails? And how does it help? I assume that the quad trails are not on the map. So can you use the elevations and such to help determine where you are on the trail?
