Default Aftermarket Clutch Friction Plates

I've been looking into aftermarket clutch friction plates. Barnett sucks.

It's looking like Kawasaki uses a compatible friction plate in some of their motorcycles. We need to use 9 friction plates though, which is a plus.

Both EBC and Vesrah have them available for the Kawasaki.

I'll be getting a set soon to try them out.

got my set of 9 kevlar EBC friction plates. they look like they will work. next step is to try them. i'll post the part numbers once i try them out. they are easier to find than barnett and cheaper too! if you don't want kevlar there are standard plates available. Vesrah also has them.

I'll also be interested in how long they hold up. Cheaper is always better if it's an equal or better product.

Default Aftermarket Clutch Friction Plates

I matched the EBC friction plates up with the stock friction plates and they are compatible. The EBC friction plates are the same dimensions as the inner barnett friction plates.

The stock clutch uses 8 frictions that are 3.5mm thick and 8 steels that are 1.5mm thick. This equals a total stack height of 40mm. The stock outer friction plate has 0.5mm narrower tabs that allow it to fit into the offset clutch hub slots - this is for preventing the user from continuing to use a clutch worn beyond spec. The inner frictions cost about $10 and the outer about $15; about $90 total from dealer.

The 9 disc setup gives 12.5% more surface area over the 8 disc setup. The 9 disc setup includes 9 frictions that are 3.0mm thick. This setup use 9 stock 1.5mm steel plates. This equals a 40.5mm stack height. The outer friction plate is identical to the inner frictions and does not go into the offset slot on the clutch hub.

EBC has a kevlar kit consisting of 9 kevlar frictions - it's called a street racer clutch set(SRC). The kit is made for a kawasaki:

1992-1994 ZR1100
or
1999-2000 ZR1100/ZRX1100

The EBC kevlar part number is SRC20. The kit also incudes 6 springs which can be discarded. The kit goes for about $72 and is readily available from multiple sources.

The EBC standard cork part number is CK4434 and doesn't include the throw away springs. For some reason this part is a little more money, about $88.

See EBC Kawasaki fitting list here http://www.cyclemallusa.com/mall/ebc/KAWISC.htm

The Vesrah frictions can be ordered for a 2003 kawasaki ZR1200. The part number for cork is VC-434. The part number for paper is PC-434. Both include 9 frictions only.

See catalog here: http://catalog.vesrah.co.jp/index_street_f.html

Good job scooby!!! Thanks for the info, If it holds up for 100 hp already, It should hold up fine for the ds. Way to think outside the box.

there's also another company that has the frictions for a 2003 kawaski ZG-1200 voyager or the 2003 ZR1200. http://www.kgclutchfactory.com/

I had this exact same problem with my very first set of barnetts that I bought. I simply filed the tabs down to fit. Is this what you plan to do to make the outer friction plate fit from this kit fit?

no i don't bother. i don't offset the outer plate, it makes no difference as long as you don't try running with a smoked clutch.
