New 400EX Owner from Motocross - Suspension Suggestions?
#1
I'm new to this list, and just recently have made the move from racing motox bikes, due to a run of many recent injuries('family' decision ya know..).
Picked up a completely stock 2000 400EX, and hit the motoX track for the first time a few days ago. What a riot! Can't jump quite as far/high but still loads of fun.
Not sure how much 'hopping up' I want to do on the EX, but my question is more of suspension details. I realize there is a recent thread about suspension for the 400EX, but I wanted to address my needs specifically.
I'd appreciate hearing recommendations on aftermarket suspensions(front and back), for someone who plans on doing most riding on a hard-packed, motox track, with maybe the occassional trail riding. I'm 210 lbs, without the gear. The stock suspension seems pretty good, but will it take the punishment of alot of jumping, etc??? I'm sure my settings are not at the optimal point, which would help.
thanks...David.

David,
The first thing you need to address actually is your rear swing-arm. At your weight and past experience the rear swing-arm WILL break rather quickly. Solutions 1. Send the stock shock out to TCS and they will valve and spring it for you. They hard anodize it and you can get your choice of single or dual spring and a no-preload set-up. Get the whole enchilada and it will set you back @ $400. I did this and I haven't done any damage to my swing-arm and I got my EX in August of '98. I do have a Houser swing-arm on stand-by just in case though. I have TCS duals w/ZPS up front and they work fantastic. I run them on Houser +2 A-arms. If you can drop @ $3000 this is what you should do.
1. TCS Dual ZPS fronts $700 or $795 [it's been a while]
2. Houser +2 A-arms $500
3. TCS dual ZPS rear upgrade $400
4. Houser +1 1/4 swing-arm $500
5. LoneStar/Durablue 2+2 axle $300
6. Fastline +2 brakelines frnt/rear $150
7. 18" Turf-Tamers in the back; Riken in the front depending on the wheels you buy@$400
Then we can do some work on the engine.

I have a roll design lobo front end on my ex. +3 on each side and triple rate custom axis shocks for 2400 from gwc. the lower a--arms are red and the uppers are chrome. 6 week wait for them. But u pay for what u get. Doug Roll is a nice guy and he backs up his products 100%
