There really is no "right" year of 250R. They're all great quads. As far as performance goes, you won't notice much (if any) difference in power or transmission gears. The 88 and 89 have shorter swingarms and the front A-arms are configured differently from the 86 and 87. They did this apparently so it would turn easier. Just buy any year, then set it up YOUR way. There are so many aftermarket parts for them it's incredible!

rather than steer you off to a site that doesn't seem to have the answer..here's my take...
I've never heard about any different gear ratios on different years of trx's...I believe the different ratios (tranny) were in the 85 and 86 ATC 250R motors, which are popular for putting in the trx chassis. 4th gear is a little taller in the ATC motor.
