Custom ATV in progress, help?
#1
hey ya'll, i got a 2004 Yamaha Big Bear 4x4 and am prepairing to totaly make it custom. The only help i need so far is on the exhust/carb part of the project. I have made a custom Double exhust system out of 2 old wolverine mufflers, and am wondering on how to jet the carb if at all. I have never had to re-jet or work on the carb (other thatn the carbs on my turcks) and am wondering on how do i re-jet or how i will know how to do so and adjust it properly. any help is great, thanks, and i will have pics up as soon as i get them,

Buy a jet kit from Dyno-Jet, you will need it or you will run way too lean with that crazy exhaust setup. The jet kit instructions and a little time and patience is all you need to rejet. Also get a K&N filter to alow more air in.
Good luck and post pics.

bawgboy,
Did that K&N make a difference on throttle response or did you do it the same time as your exhaust?? I was curious and thinking of doing it to mine but I dont want the loud exhaust of that aftermrket pipe. Also are you ever going to post some pic's of your bear?

BigBear:
First mod I did was the K&N and jetting. Bought it as a kit (DJ jet kit plus KN filter). I went from stock jet to a 124, needle clip on second slot (worked like crap on the third as DJ suggested). Made a huge difference. Way more free reving and lots more giddy up. Next was a Supertrapp IDS2 and went up to a 132 main jet. Massive difference. Runs right along side my buddies Kodiak 400 no problem (until I run out of gears). I would definitely do the K&N.
By the way, the Supertrapp is not that loud, and you can tune it by adding/removing discs. I would recommend it to anyone. Install and fit/finish was perfect.
I definitely need to post pics. Will snap some on the trail this weekend.
Cheers.

Thanks for the K&N info. I will get that next or after the rear bumper.
The floorboards were purchased. Check out my signature for brands on the mod's. For the lift I wanted to install myself and the moose is the fairly simple to install compared to highlifters version. But I understand the highlifter version will give you an additional 1/2".
I paid $107.00 for the floorboards which includes shipping, tax etc
I think the lift was around $100.00
the spacers were $65.00 per set
tires $300.00
wheels $ 300
warn bumper $129.00 , light kit $45.00
I'm going to do new pic's this weekend and I will post up after I clean it for this weekends ride in Crosby texas.

I dont know that i would waste money on a jet kit. there is no doubt that it is going to be running lean but with the jet kit you are going to get no pilot jets and alot of other jets you dont need.
After you install this system, crank it up and see how it sounds, rev it up a little bit and see if you notice an irregualrities from what it was before (no doubt that you will ). Once that is complete install a new spark plug, get it out in an open space, crank it up and haul @$$, after you start reaching upper rpm ranges (nearing top speed) hold the gearshift down (between gears) and shut the engine off. take the plug out and see what it looks like, white is to lean, black is to rich, brown is good to go. NOTE: a larger main jet will richin up the mixture just as it would a car. You can get mains at your dealership for about 2.50-3.50 each vs. 55 bucks for a jet kit. Now after you get that solved you get her back out on an open area and start going through the gear and once you get up to about 35-40 or so let off the gas and let the engine slow the bike down. If you hear any poping (thats exessivly loud) or backfiring (like its starving for fuel) then you need to go to a larger pilot jet. If this problem occours then i would prolly jump up about 2 sizes and go from there. hope this helps.

hey. for tires i got a set of "AMS Swamp Fox"es and i love them on my beartracker 250. i got them in 23x10x10. mine were about $130 for the 2. the tread height was around 3/4 on an inch. i have never been stuck in a hole (i have bottomed out in rutts and got stuck on logs 3 or 4 times) or even had my tires spin, unless i wanted them to and i still have probs spinning them because of all the traction i get. from what i have heard, these are not very popular but i love them, they are nothin like the stock dunlops or the trail wolfs i have had on it before. just my 2 cents - fanninator
