no spark on lt80
#1
Hey guy's I'm a noobie to this forum, been looking around for awhile this place seems a whole lot better than the one I have been a member of for a long time. Any ways here is my ? I got an 198? lt80 and it wont start,I have fuel and compression about 85psi,but no spark.Does any one have any quick checks for pick up coil and stator? I'm not too sure about two strokes the stator on this only has two wires, and all my 4strokes have three.I really dont feel like buying a service manual so any info. will be great. Thanks in advance Jason.

Remove the hood and find those 2 wires that come from the stator. Disconnect and ground the red/black wire and crank the motor over, see if it sparks. If so, stator is OK and the coil prolly isn't.

Thank's LT80, That's exactly what I was looking for. I have spark every other revolution, so it looks like I will be purchasing a new coil.Once again thanks for the short cut. I'm sure ya'll will be seeing alot more of me around here. Jason

Good eye confused one
I forgot about that. I agree the compression is way low and providing that reading is accurate, the top end needs rebuilt. This could be the main problem.
Stock compression should be around 125 lbs.

Well then I guess it's back to the garage. Thanks for the input guy's, I'll pull the right cover and fly wheel and maybe the top end just to see whats happening in there. A friend of mine gave me the bike so I have 0.00 in it right now, and I don't know the history of it either, this will give me a good start. Thanks again, Jason

OK guy's removed the flywheel and cleaned and sanded it it was nasty.good call LT80. But I sill have weak spark, I can put my hand between the wire and ground and it feels like a 9volt battery is that normal ? I know I have to put a top end in it, but I would like to see how much the ignition is going to cost first. Thanks again, Jason
