light burning smell and a rattle on 05 SP 700.

In the last couple of weeks my 05 700 efi has been making a very light rattle at about 1350 to 1600 rpms. It would come and go and also when it was brand new I could smell a light burning smell. I just thought maybe it might be the belt since it was new. It has 350 miles on it now and I haven't smelled the light burned rubber smell like it was when it was new. I traced my light rattle down, which turned out to be a bracket on the exhaust just after it comes out of the motor after your exhaust pipe makes a 90 degree angle and starts going to the rear of the quad that is where the bracket is. The bracket looks like welded plate about 1 to 2 inches below the exhaust pip. Their is another plate lower with a bolt coming up through the plate to the other plate and the bolt has several rubber washers to rest against the plate for vibration and their is a spring attached from one bracket to another to keep the bracket tight against the rubber washers. The top rubber washer melted and I think thats where the burning smell was coming from since it was new and since the washer burned off there was a space causing a vibration. I put in a new washer not made of rubber and everything is fine. All you have to do to put the washer in is lift up the pipe and the spring will stretch and then you put in the washer. You guys may want to check your quad and see if yours was like mine. I talked with other guys in this forum on a different topic that could smell rubber burning on theirs too, so I know it is not just my quad that is doing this. I think elkbow was one of them.

Thanks for posting this. I too smelled the burning rubber and thought it was the belt seating in. I checked My 700 and it is beginning to melt. I have 47 miles on it and when it goes back to dealer for service I will point this out. The rattle I hear I believe comes from the clutch when I am coasting because others have posted about this and have determined it to be there.

When I had about 300 miles on mine, I started to notice the rattle. Yours will probably do the same thing. If you take a washer about 1inch by 1inch, not a metal one and stick it in between the other rubber washer and the bracket and you will be fine. Just lift up on the exhaust at the bracket and stick the washer in.
The rattle that you are talking about in the clutch sounds that it is normal. It is a noise that comes from the EBS when they are engaging and disengaging. That is normal, it make kind of makes a clanking sound. Hope this helps.

Make sure it is something like you are saying burning, otherwise expect it to be your belt....it is common. When you beat the hell out of the machine, you will smell the belt...but don't worry. I climbed this huge rocky hill today....i said to my friend, watch this....I just took off in high gear, i figured the way to get up was momentum...i was right, but when i got up there, the steepness put some torque on the machine and I could smell the belt, it also does it when i ride technical terrain....it will also do it more when i ride at higher altitudes and in snow...
