firecpt, its operates only the rear. its mainly there as a back up system to the hand brake, which is the primary braking, should it fail or get broken off.
polaris actually calls it an auxillary brake, and you will find, if not already, that it won't stop like the hand brake will. you're only braking with 1 set of pads and a small cylinder and trying to stop all that sp500. also, if you use it alot the cylinder will pull air into it causing you to have to bleed the system. this is because of the hose fitting that pushes into a grommet on the cylinder.

Don't you need to depress it to get into Reverse and Park?

the engine brake is not controlled by the brake really. it is the way the clutches are designed. the front clutch has a one way bearing in it. and when you let off the throttle the engine slows down and in turn helps to slow the trans. the only reason it would seem to increase engine braking is that it would lock up the rear wheels sooner
as far as the reverse/park, that is not on an 03 sportsman 500.

Two words: OWNER'S MANUAL. It's all in there guys. As a rule I wouldn't listen to the dealer, jeffro is a rare exception to that rule. You should tour the country jeffro and teach these dinks (dealers) a thing or two, it would really help the Polaris name. We need more knowledgeable dealers that care about customer satisfaction, not just the sale.
