Roll off or tear off goggles??
#1
I need a set of goggles for this upcoming season. Last year I just wore a regular set, but found myself many times with the goggles off half way through the race due to mud. I feel I lost time after because I had no eye protection. Well this year I don't want that to happen. But which is better, the roll off or tear off system?

My cousin had the one's that side across the lens into some sort of cartridge with a pull string. One race it broke and it was streaming 20 feet behind him, though he didn't realzie it. It was gut busting

GE4x4, When I raced dirt bikes I used roll offs. They were pretty reliable, the replacement cartridges were pretty cheap and if you want to try and save a buck I think you could probably get away with cleaning the film after use as long as it doesn't get scratched and re-roll them back up. The only down fall I can see with them is if it is raining real hard water (or mud) can get behind the film then it smears when you roll them. My Smith's come with an adhesive strip that glues on the lens and overlaps the film. This helps but I have still had the problem though very rare. Personally I think they are still better than tearoffs as they have downfalls also. Plus once you tear them off and throw them they're gone. At least you can carry spare film rolls in your fanny pack.

I race GNCC and have not done a race where there was no mud. Some are nothing but mud. I just want a pair that will hold up to a 2hr race. Cost isn't a issue, it's which will work best for my type of racing.

Then you want tear offs. The roll offs are toast if any water or mud gets under the film or in the string mechanism. If they bind up and you pull just a little too hard, the string breaks off inside. I really tried to like them but they are not rugged enough. If you race, keep it simple.

I've always had great luck with the roll-offs. Just a bit of care and common sense have kept mine lasting quite a while.....now of course for me writing this....I'll be the next guy with a 20 ft string of plastic behind.
You'll hear good and bad both ways. I'd go to your local gear shop and see which you like the best.
