Tell him to go for the Outlander with the IRS. It rides great and works well. The powerplant of the Outlander is well suited for the type of riding you described and Bombardier has geared it well.
I have an Outlander Max XT and weigh 340#. Me and my wife (200#) have taken some long, steep trails with no power problems. We got up to 52 mph on a flat but muddy road.
The Outlander seems to ride best with a passenger. When I have ridden it alone, it feels a little stiff in the back.
I am very happy with my decision, as I was considerng the Traxter, with the larger motor, but wanted a better ride and 4-wheel capbability.
E-mail me if you have any questions or if you want to see some photos of some of the steep obstacles we have gone up.
