Head Bolts Stripped on '85 200s
#1
I took the motor off my 200s to rebuild, but the damn head bolts are allen wrench topped, and they stripped because i wasnt using a metric wrench. I dont know how to get them off, isnt there a tool that can do it|? and advice?

Try vise grips or drilling into into the center of the bolt( the allen head hole makes a nice pilot to keep the drill straight down the middle so you don't messup the threads) then use an easy out. It works great I've done it several times on Gas Turbines when someone use the wrong wrench to get them out.Remember, BE PATIENCE and take your time. You will find this to actually be quicker than trashing it with channel locks or any other tool of choice.

Here are a couple more tips:
One important point to remember when removing the allen bolts on any of these type engines is to always loosen the allen bolts before loosening the head bolts. The head bolts are torqued down to a greater torque and thus will put a bind on the allen bolts if you loosen them first.
-You can purchase a set of tools that looks like sockets but have teeth on the inside. They are designed to hammer onto a rounded bolt or nut. It will even work on a twisted off bolt if you have enough bolt to hammer it onto. You can find these at sears. One of these should fit around the entire head of the allen bolt. Make sure you hammer it down flush with the valve cover but dont hammer it too hard or you might crack the cover.
-you could cut a groove in the top of the allen bolt and then use a flat screw driver to turn the bolt. This would work best with a screwdriver bit attached to a socket.
-vise grips have worked for me in the past on this exact problem on a 200
-the ease out will work as well but it is the "easiest" way to screw up your threads. Also those things will break off making the situation worse.
By far the set of tools I mentioned are the most fool proof method. They are amazing. You can even take a wheel lock off a car with one!
However you decide to do this, take your time!
And don't attempt to use heat. You can screw stuff up in a hurry that way.
