I purchased a 2000 Trailblazer 250 used from a Polaris dealer. During my pre-purchase ride, I noticed the rear brake would not lock up the rear wheels. The dealer said this is normal that the rear brake is not designed to stop the quad but more slow it down. I was told the handbrake is designed to be used while riding. The handbrake works great. I can understand part of this, but I have never had an ATV that would not lock up the rear wheels. Is the dealer correct? If they are not correct, how do I get better performance out of the rear caliper. I have replaced brake pads and brake fluid. The brakes are bled and I have also adjusted the footpedal to get maximum push. Thanks for your help.

on the trailblazer you should be able to slide rear with foot brake, at least all 3 (tb, sport,5002x4) that i had i could. what type of pads do you have, polaris has a severe duty that are a harder compound and don't have as much bite on the rotor, more pressure needed to stop.
also, make sure you dont have a problem with the caliper its self. like a piston sticking.

as far as the reply to other post. yea he is right about the brake being an "emergency" brake, but didn't really have info on fix.

 

Hello wavehog. I noticed that both of my Trailblazers would lock up the rear tires (on dirt) with the rear brakes when they were new, but you really had to ream on them. As said earlier, the hand brake applies both front and rear brakes simultaneously. The hand brake works so well I never use the foot pedal. There are two separate hydraulic circuits for the rear brake. One circuit connects to the hand brake and the other connects to the pedal. The highest force can be exerted by the hand brake because that that is the main brake. And as said earlier, the pedal is listed in the users manual as an "auxillary brake that is a backup if the main system becomes inoperative".
