Default KNOWSALOT - - Carb Help

OK so i rebuilt the carb for my 185s with a 200 kit i belive it was a 105main and a 38Pilot. Cannot get it to stay running long enough to get it adjusted could you help me out on initial settings at all. Also is it normal for these machines to need the choke on full and throttle wide open to start. Maybe it just me but thats the only way it starts and the way i look at it is if you crack the throttle it completely takes away the point of choking it doesnt it. Also where about should the float level be set?? If you take the vent hose and open the drain and hold the hose to the side of the carb about how far dow should the fuel line be from where the bowl seats against the carb itself. Would really appreciate the settings for the idle and pilot screw and about where the float level should be.. Thanks alot.

Im shootin from the hip here,,,and I dont have the book in front of me.

The stock jet sizes sound a bit too big. If i'm not mistaken I believe they are 102/35 and the float should be set at .49"(not the tube method).

start at around 2 1/4 turns out on the air/fuel screw

once the idle screw makes contact with the slide,,,,give it about 1 1/2 turns in to start.,,,,,and then back it down from there once you get it running

Yup you got sent the wrong kit.

PD35A Specs as follows;

Main Jet 95
Pilot screw 2 turns out
Needle jet clip position 2nd groove from the 'TOP'
Float level 0.49"(12.5)

I'd call Moose and bitch but I did that once and it did me no good. In fact it was on the stock 200X carb, the bowl o-ring is nowhere near round and they send a round o-ring in the kit! Called them and the service rep told me it has to be formed to fit the bowl. What a crock!

For starters, your problem is a restriction....and not the other way around. Your jet sizes are actually what needed to be run in these engines to begin with out of the box.

The 200 carb kit isn't the problem here. These bikes run lean from the factory as it is, so if anything you are making an upgrade by using the 200 kit.

No dealer or hop up shop with half their witts about them ever kept carb kits for the 185 anyway. [Likely why you ended up with the 200 kit as well]. Today's dealers usually have young folks around now who don't know squat about an ATC and what works on them and what doesn't.

There is no differences in the 185 and 200 engines other than 9cc. The intakes are the same, exhausts are the same. I can backup my claim that your carb kit has nothing to do with your problem based on probably a hundred that I have built over the last 15 years have NEVER consisted of using a 185 kit and ALWAYS the 200 kit.

As for getting back to why you have a problem......It sounds to me like you have a restriction somewhere in the slow circuit. If you have a removable pilot jet, remove it and apply compressed air to that galley. If it isn't, you can still apply compressed air through it, but it is a bit trickier to do. Remove the air/fuel mixure screw and do the same thing.
