How much dirt does your air filter stop?
Interesting video I found on truckworld.com. It compares the filtering effects of a paper, cotton gauze and foam filters. Figured I'd post it since there are always K&N vs. UNI threads.

I was looking at my K and N and you can see pin size holes in it. Now thats a good indacator that sand and dirt can easy get though it. I belive I will go back stock on the filter. I would rather lose $40 dollars on a filter than $400 on the engine.

I've seen that before. There is also another video out there that does a test on performance vs how much dirt passes through. The problem with this video is that it does not show how much CFM is actually flowing through the filter. I'll try to find the other link, it will show that the true flow actually does flow less CFM compared to other filters and still allows the same amount of dirt through as the K&N, Uni-fliter, Amsoil filter, etc. The video I watched actually showed that there was a certain amount of dirt that got through on all of them, pretty close to the same, the problem came to how restrictive the filter was and the trueflow was near the bottom of the test on airflow...

I wanted to see a few opinions before I said mine. Elkbow, I agree with you. The guy on this video made it sound like a better flowing air filter is not going to add performance. Take another look at the video. When his True Flow air filter begins letting dirt through he immediately shut off the machine. He talks about the "honey comb" in the True Flow that is supposed to trap dirt, but I'm thinking that is just takes the dirt longer to come through the filter. Think of Plinko on the Price is Right. That's just what I imagine the dirt doing as it makes its was through the True Flow.
Bottom line, there has to be a happy medium between air flow and filtration. I don't think this was a valid test because they are not showing how much CFM is flowing through the filter itself, as elkbow stated.

You are also right, there is a happy medium, I don't believe that the K&N stops dirt as much as some other filters, but they do provide high airflow. How many people had to rebuild their engines due to particles going through the intake? I drove my Nissan pickup for 266,000 miles with a K&N on it since day two. It still had near full compression at that many miles. I think the affects of dirt passing through is not really detailed. If my Nissan can go with one of the less restrictive filters like the K&N for 266,000 miles, that has to say something, not sure what...lol. Anyways, I have an Amsoil 2-stage foam filter in my Superduty diesel, but its a pain to clean and oil....I think it is alittle more important to get a good dirt stopage filter on turbo's...
