I wouldn't use brake cleaner myself I prefer to use alcohol to clean the surface. You can even use paint thinner. Before applying the sticker(s) I spray the area with Windex, then lay the sticker down. The windex let's you move it around, to get it perfect. Then, use a credit card to squeeze out all the air bubbles and let dry.

could always pour some goo gone on it lol. When i put stickers down i generally just wet it, wipe it, and then wet it again and dry it, put it down and rub it on good

I just clean it with soap and water. But I heat up them up with a hair dryer. heat the fender up so that its nice and warm and then put the decal on and just heat the sticker up a little and smooth it out. It makes the sticker stick a lot longer.
