Default 2000 honda recon 250

Hi folks,

I have a 2000 Honda recon 250. its at the Honda dealer right now and ready for my pickup because they dont know what to do with it. it went in for swing arm bearings, and they did put the new bearings in the swing arm, but they are saying the left side on the frame, where the swing arm bolt screws thu the frame is stripped out, and they cannot attach the swing arm. and they say they have nothing that big to tap new threads.

what do I do next? machine shop? Or hopefully somewon else had this problem before. thanks!

If that part wasn't broke when you took there, tell em to stop smoking the green and return your quad in the same state they got it in. This is just one more reason to get a shop manual and start doing your own work.

I have run across a few that have had damaged threads. Only in cases where the control arm was removed before and the bolt not torqued correct, and worked its way out have I seen damaged threads from a failure. Myself, I have been in a hurry, trying to beat flat rate time, not removed the front of the rear mudguard, of footwell to access the bolt. When trying to install the bolt, using an impact, I have cross threaded a few. With the footwell in place the bolt cannot be accessed straight.
Eather way, I have taken a new bolt and put notches in it with a Dremel and tiny cut off wheel, perpandicular to the threads to make a tap. The one I have in my tool box is the bolt from the right side, because it has no head and I can run it all the way through the frame. I have 8 notches cut around it. The best way to get the threads straight is to start from the inside, with the swing arm out. The trick is to have patience and get it started straight, and use a good cutting oil, not forcing it, but working it back and forth once started. To get it started I use a vice gip on an allan socket and lightly tapping on it with a hammer while pushing inward and turning slowly. I have been able to salvage all of the frame threads that I have seen damaged in this manner.
Honestly though, I have never seen the threads get messed up from bad swing arm bearings, like I said before, someone messed them up .....

Be sure to tell us how this turns out! You should argue till you get what you had.

wow gimpster, great fix-it advice. basically, the bolt is straightening out/cleaning up the old threads?? don't know if it would work here, but i had a stripped hole for a front bush guard on my truck. it only fit special tapered allen-bolt. i used jbweld to build up the inside of the threads, let it dry a long time, then re-tapped and it held the bolt. i was surprised. but i didn't torque it down super hard, only snug.

Okay, I think i might screwed it up. I took it to another bike shop and they told me they couldnt fix it. nobody has a tap big enough for this, and to get one its probally 50-60 bucks.
my friend that is a drag racer and also has a quad said he would "bore" out the hole, and smooth out the threads, and then weld the big bolt in there that goes into the frame then slides into the bearing in the swing arm. thats his solution... I dont know if I wanna pay to get a tap that big. and he can easily cut the weld if i need to change the bearings in the future. what do you all think about that?
