Default 400ex upgrades piston, cam, etc

i have a 01' 400ex and i need to replace the piston rings...i figured while i was in there i would do some upgrades....thought about an 11:1 stock bore wiseco piston and a cam...either the white brothers all around or hotcams stage 2....also plan on replacing the header pipe with an fmf (hi flo or power bomb)....thought about a 440 kit but i want to remain reliable and don't want to spend that kind of $$$.....

it already has a white brothers e-series slip on, rev box, k&n, and jet....i mainly ride trail and track in the midwest

the question is....is anybody running this set up or something similar??...and how do you like it???

If you go with 11:1 I would go with a 426 ROSS or JE piston with Hot Cam 2 . I had a 426 all this year on mine and loved it.Also porting will be a nice enhancement.the Cost wasnt that much different and a 440 can be as equally reliable if you do the job right the first time and it runs cooler.....

I decided to go a new route and do a 12:1 Full Duncan 440 kit this time with a 450R carb . either way I have a jug for both and Ill have my 426 if I ever needed to fall back on it, butanyhow, if your mods are done right you will be very pleased...

I've heard that the 450r carb on even a stock 400ex is a big improvement. Haven't tried or seen it yet, but it's definitely worth considering. Link to a forum discussion on the carb below:

i have then 440 kit in my 400 and i like it alot it runs great. the only bad thing about it is that i herd 440 kits are bad for blowing head gaskets, but the honda shop guys say it isnt hard to fix just do it right. you should consider the 440 kit

Where did you find the gains when adding a 450R carb to the EX?

The link below was from an earlier atvconnections forum post (my http link above didn't have the correct text The page includes dynos comparing the 450r carb on a 400ex (it is actually a 416, but the gains should be relevant?). A 4hp increase is shown with the upgraded carb:

The original atvforums thread is here:

hey TNTquadjunkie

can you post some up close picture of your plastics. I bought some new Maier plastics, however, the instructions on how to assemble are the worst ever.
