Take it off the machine and fill it with varsol. let it set over night. Shake it hard once and a while. Drain the varsol out and if possible get the end of a pressure washer in there and blast it. Refill with varsol and rince again. I would flush with gas once before using, There is a coating you can use once this is done but I've heard mixed reviews on this.

any hardware store would sell it. $4 for a gallon of it. Also when you hook your tank back up make sure you have a good fuel filter

I've heard of using small pea gravel, like what you would put in a fish aquiram. Fill your empty tank about 1/4 full of gravel and then shake it around and it will act like sand paper on the inside. Then of course you would clean it all out. I've never tried it but it sounds like it would work.

The problem is being realistic about the rust thing, now that it's started it is always going to be a problem with that tank.

Default New Guy, Question about rusted gas tank.

i cleaned a tank last year with about 4 ft. of twisted bronze colored metal chain. let the tank completely dry out for several days. tie a string to the chain, and toss it in. after about several times of thouroghly shaking and rinsing the tank, it became new looking inside. the string helps if the chain gets wedged inside. this was is not easy, if you slack, you get a slack job. so take your time.

my friend used the acid cleaner and ruined his tank, but the tank was already in bad condition.
throwing in some nuts and bolts is done by some people, but the design of the tank may end up making them a pain to get out.

I'm in O'Fallon, MO, when you get it up and running we should plan a ride around here!
