Default '96 Express 300...Please help!

My '96 300 will start and idle, but when I open the throttle it bogs and backfires. Also smokes more than usual. Spark plug has oil on it. I have done the following:
flushed fuel tank(a lil trash, but not bad)replaced fuel lines and filternew air filtersprayed carb with carb cleanercompression test: 110psinew spark plug

I bought this machine new and have had no probs til now. I need some ideas before I put it in the shop and spend money that I don't have! Any info will be appreciated.

thanks
MM

what does it do if you hold the reverse override button in while throttling it? '96 also had shifter switch problems, the switch would "tell" the reverse limiter it was in rev when in neut or frw.

no change with rev. override engaged. Don't know about shifter switch. I don't have a shop manual nor am I a mechanic, just tryin' to work with a lil' common sense. Where's a good place to get a manual online?
thanks for the reply,
MM

check ebay for a manual. the factory manual for the 96's is a big binder that covered several yrs. i believe clymer has specific yrs and models. what you are describing definitely sounds like ignition problem somewhere. under your front panel for the head light is a circuit board. you'll find a blk wire going to the cdi box ( this is located on top of the oil tank ususally) and a wire runs to the coil from it. unplug the black wire. if you still have the problem it could be the stator, if not then it is in the shutoff system somewhere. also, check all wires and grounds, the yrs with the panel had a few problems, especially with mice eatin' the wires.

Now I'm gettin' somewhere...unplugged black wire from cdi...runs good! Bad stator? I kinda know what the stator coil does on a V-8, but I'm a "green-horn" on a 2-stroke. What'll happen if I run it with the black wire unplugged?
thanks

Are you sure you unplugged the wire from the CDI and not the revese limiter box? Cause that would cause your problem too.(bet you did)Put you a volt meter on the battry and see what the voltage is.

yep, you're right . I "by-passed" the reverse limiter box and everything's groovy...and I can fly backwards!
