I think I want to switch to a scrambler
#1
alright I admit it... I haven't had my sportsman 500 very long, but I'm just disapointed in it's speed. I guess I'm just used to dirtbikes, and this thing is 4x the weight. I end up using low range everywhere I go (usually at 9000 feet).
Here's what I'm thinking...
I really wanted a 4x4 sport quad like a wolverine to begin with, but then got enticed into something with a low range. I'm thinking I'll be much happier with the scrambler because it's 130 lbs lighter with the same engine. I do still have an engine coming from four stroke tech that they're going to stroke out to a 600 and all that jazz.
My debate is that maybe once I get the new engine installed in the sportsman, it'll be plenty fast enough for me. I do like the IRS for ground clearance here in CO. I'm just a weight stickler, and 130 lbs lighter is a HUGE amount of weight.
If I got a scrambler, I'm looking at an 04 model, and immediately installing a 400 explorer tranny to give it the low range. I'd also install 25" mudlites front and rear. I'd think taht would be a hell of a machine, especially once I put the 600 stroker motor in there
Anyone think I should try the stroker in the sportsman first? Or would I just be happier with a scrammy?
oh, one more question: I noticed that the scrambler comes with smaller tires on the back then on the front. Does this mean I can't put matching tires on both front and rear? I already have 25s I can take off my sportsman.

Since you all ready have the Sportsman frame I don't see why not put it in it. I would love to hear the results of the motor in the Scrammy frame, of course. Sounds like it's time to figure out what you really want. As far as tires on a Scrammy go, it will be dictated by the Explorer tranny you put in it. They usually have larger rear tires than the front. The 25s of the sportsman may go real nice on it.

A scrambler 600 with low range it couldn't get any better then that. I have a 700 and I haven't rode it since I got my scrammy. The 700 has a great soft ride and enough torque to pull a house down but the scrambler is great in the trails. With a little clutch work it will jump out from under you.
