Rejetting Sportsman for cold weather?
#1
does anyone rejet their sportsman for winter cold? The manual says it is jetted for temps as low as 40 degrees if i run it at 10 degrees is my engine at risk of damage? Thanks for any help.

If your 500 is jetted for warmer temperatures, it will definitely be running lean at 10 degrees. I'd check out the jetting recommendations in your owner's manual for temp and altitude. I don't know what you're out doing in 10 degree temps, but if you tend to run at WOT (or more than 3/4 throttle), you should look into those jetting recommendations. If you're just pushing a plow in the driveway or going to a hunting stand with somewhat light throttle application, you probably don't have too much to worry about. It doesn't get near that cold where I live, but when I'm out in temps below 40 degrees, I'm out hunting and I try to be as quiet as I can and stay off the throttle, so there's no need for me to re-jet.

Thanks Oleman, most of the time i'm out plowing or playing, but not on the throttle over halfway. i dropped the e-clip in the carb one notch and drilled out the plug so i can adjust the pilot, so as long as i'm not reamin' it i hope to be o.k.- Thanks again for trhe reply

I've run my 2004.5 Sportsman 500 h.o. in -20'f (-30"c) without re-jetting and it starts and runs just fine with the stock jetting (although I don't run high rpm in that temp.) Even my dealer can't believe I don't have to play with the choke when I'm plowing. I pull it on to start then after idling about a minute I push it off and it idles on it's own. Maybe I just got a good one?

I live in Wisconsin and use my atv for ice fishing. I just put a dial a jet on and havent had it out in really cold temps. 10 is the coldest so far but i hope to see how it does. Even at at temp it starts beter then without dial a jet.
