Default 85 ATC250r- Need Some Opinions on Motor problems

Hey Honda guys.,

I've had a '85 ATC250r for the last six years. It was sort of beat cosmetically when I bought it but a little new plastic here and there and elbow grease it cleaned up pretty good.
It's been used exclusively at the dunes and desert always been rode pretty hard.
It has ran great for all these years with no problems. Just regular maint.
Last summer the son in law was rideing it on the salt flats. There is a 30 mile stretch where you can run full open along I-80. Sort of fun to pace the freeway traffic. So anyway we rode all the way out and were on the way back, prob'ly in the high eighties for temp. and running full throttle.
The motor just quit... no sputter no smoke, no flames just like the kill switch was thrown. We checked for spark and fuel and kicked it for awhile, tried pull starting it then rode back and returned with the truck. I played with it a bit at home I couldn't feel any compression. Then threw a tarp over it and there it sits. What do you motor heads think? piston? rings? Reed valve? I'd like to get it running.. tis the season you know? I have a manual and i'm fairly wrench worthy. what do you think I'm looking at ? any info would help.

Definitely sounds like you need a new top end. Slap in a piston kit the next size up and I bet you're good to go. I would rejet though, that's probably what caused it in the first place, along with normal wear and tear.

Id eliminate the easy stuff first.
Fuel making it to the float bowl?
Does it have spark?
Does it have at least 100 psi compression?

Yea, you'll need to rebore, about $50 for that and about $100 for the piston kit. hondabuster has good advice too, do what he said also. Thanks, about the nickname
