My ’05 650 V2 sucked up muddy water in the air filter snorkel for the first time this weekend (Finger Lake, Mo). I noticed blue smoke right away and drove it a short distance back to the staging area. There was a little “white” cream mixed with the oil but the no over heating. I was slightly worried that I might have cracked my block (hot engine in a cool,deep pit) and leaked water in from the coolant ports, etc, but no loss of antifreeze calmed me of that fear.

After hauling it home, I cleaned the plugs (sludge’d over), air filter, sprayed carb cleaner in the carb, flush crankcase with “Gunk” crankcase cleaner, and a couple of oil changes (ran engine up for 5) and final filter and oil change.

It runs fine now, no blue smoke, the oil is clean, and idles smooth., and shifts fine for an auto…I don’t think water got in my belt housing but probably will pull it and check.

My question: Is there anything else I should do? Is there a carb bowl drain **** for the 650 V2 carbs, can’t seem to find it?

Any other post maintenance I should do?

Pull the belt to make sure. If you have some miles on it then do the belt adjustment thing. Oh yea clean the radiator off the fins my have mud buld up on it.

 

buy a new plug. i drowned mine out and i cleaned the plug up and well a couple weeks later it started missing on top end so i put a new plug in and it took care of it. i would also change the oil again after about 50 miles just to be safe and filter to that water can stay up in your crank bearings and pit them so it would be another safety precaution. one thing i did with mine was i couldn't get all the water out so i poured kerosean in and started it and let it idle forward and back and never reved it just let it idle for no more then 30 seconds then drained it. the kerosean will pull all the water out and it worked very well.

 

this reminds me, after you guys ride, how do you clean off your engine, i know its bad to put cold water on a hot engine but i leave my running and try not to keep the water on it too long, just to rinse it off

 

if i been out riding all day is what i usually do and i come back and everything is dirty and grimey i usually don't feel like looking at it so i park it in front of the pressure washer then the next day i usually go out and wash it from front to back. remember a clean machine is a happy machine (mine is usually mad though) just make sure if you use a pressure washer that when it comes to washing around the decals you hit it straight on with the water blast and not at an angle. if nothing else try to let it sit for i am guess a half an hour before washing the motor or leave it till last then it should cool down enough.

 

MuddyPup - Do you have an intake and exhaust snokle? How deep were you? I've been woundering on how the new air intake design on the 05's would work out. Not sure how deep you can go before the air diverter located at the front would inhale water into the airbox. Looking to modify!

 

I was up to the top of my 27' tires. I have never drowned out with my '04 400 though. I'm thinking about adding an extension snorkel, I would hate drain my crank and carb everytime I decide to mud...sometimes it's hard to tell if there's a bottom to the mud holes.

 

I'm into water quite a bit has you can see from my pics. I'm not a big fan on having these huge pipes coming out from the plastic, but I do like having all the vents up near the handle bars. I had my AC 2000 500 done and it was sweet, only inhaled water once playing around in a lake, my fault! The 04's have a nice set up, the 05's, not good if you only up to the top of your 27's.

Getting my exhaust snorkle finished today, will attached pics when it's all done!

Still thinking on what to do with the air intake?

 

when i drowned out my 04 last summer the water was ultimately about 1 inch over the racks so yeah she was submerged but with a lil tlc my baby was up and running in no time. but i know the polaris's can go in deeper water then the cats before drowning out. (dang i said something nice about the polaris cherish this moment)
