Default Motorhome or Toy hauler?

My wife and I are looking at our options and don't know which way we want to go. I would like to get a truck capable of pulling a 26' toy-hauler and purchase a used toy-hauler to pull behind, but she would rather purchase a Motorhome and pull a new 6'x12' flatbed trailer for all the toys. Her reasons for the Motorhome is that we can use it to travel cross country and camp where we want and she could help with the driving. She doesn't want to drive a truck pulling a trailer.... I don't have much of an opinion either way so long as I can get my toys where I'm going.

No I'm not getting a Motorhome and toy hauler together....thats over kill.

How many of you use a motorhome and what are the advantages over a HD truck with a toy-hauler?

Default Motorhome or Toy hauler?

Hello SCOUNDREL. We have a Class A motorhome, Winnebago Vectra. The advantages of the MH is that you can stop most anywhere and go to sleep and still have all the amenities of home. When my wife and I leave friday night for the weekend, we can drive for 4 or 5 hours and just stop at a rest area on the highway to sleep for the night. No need to find a room or a camp site. Other advantages are, since it weights in at 15000 lbs (dry), you will never feel the trailer behind you. In addition, after driving for 4 or 5 hours you might stop for a few and cat nap. BTW, if your so inclined, it is legal for passengers to drink while you drive. This is great if you are taking a number of passengers. We have a built in 25 inch TV, so passengers can watch videos to pass the time. Of course it has a generator, air 100 gallons of water, shower.... Home on wheels. You can stop whenever to relieve yourself, LOL. We tow our jeep, quads, jetskis sleds, bikes, kayaks or whatever we are inclined to play with.

Default Motorhome or Toy hauler?

I don't own either but do plan on buying a rig in the near future. The only advantages I can see that a truck/toyhauler has over a motorhome would be the ability to go deeper offroad where a motorhome would typically get stuck, and also the security of knowing your toys are locked up in the hauler. THat is unless you buy an enclosed trailer to pull behind the motorhome. If you already own a capable tow rig than a toyhauler is typically going to cost less than a comparable motorhome. In your case having to buy both a tow rig and hauler may end up costing more than a motorhome.

Otherwise a motorhome is the way to go in terms of comfort and convenience if you don't need the offroad capabilities of a 4x4/toyhauler. Another option is that there are a few truck chassis 4x4 motorhomes on the market but their size is limited.

Oh and one last thing I forgot was that with a truck/trailer you can always unhook at a campsite and have a vehicle to take off into town or go exploring. Can't do that in a motorhome.

The answer to your questions depend on where you ride @ !

If your riding areas (i am assuming glamis is one) have access for motorhomes (vehicles that do not have 4WD), and you never see the possibilty of going to places that do (Pismo is one that comes to mind), then go the motorhome route.

On the flip side, If your riding areas are hard to get to, and require 4WD, then the choice is obvious!

I required a TV and toy hauler because we frequent pismo. You should see all the people pulling onto the beach with Diesel Pushers (DP)!. It is a riot to watch them get stuck!

Does your wife ride? It sounds like she is not too hip on the Tow Vehicle (TV) and trailer. I learned when we were looking at ours to involve her as much as possible. We could have had a much bigger toy hauler, but opted for the one we have now, because my wife liked it better. I owuld hate to have to have her camp in a trailer she didn't like

if you have any further ?'s, you can PM me

If you are getting something for in state trips or nevada I would go toy hauler because you can park the toy hauler and use the truck everyday. But for the cross country stuff I would say motorhome and enclosed trailer for sure. It would be much more comfortable in my opinion.

My 2 cents.

If you are going anywhere that isn't sand - a motorhome will do fine. (I'd actually recommend it).

If you're into hitting the sand - you need both a motorhome and a tow vehicle - or a tow vehicle and a toy hauler.

I've seen the tide nearly take away motorhomes @ pismo. I've seen them stuck @ sand mountain and glamis.

If you have a hearty tow vehicle along - this isn't a problem. But who wants to drive two vehicles everytime you want to go to the sand?
I suppose you could get away w/ it @ pismo - only because most people are very friendly and will nearly always watch the RV'r struggle for an hour before helping out. But they always lend a hand (or tow).

But motorhomes do have the (on-the-road) bathroom advantage.

I did see one get stuck at the river once too - the boat was pretty heavy as somebody forgot to put in the plugs and the boat sank. It was freaking funny! Took a tow truck to pull it out.

THIS is the EXACT reason I use an Excursion 4x4 as the tow vehicle and my Enclosed Trailer (Weekend Warrior 30' toyhauler) as the living quarters.

I cant tell you how many times my motorhome buddies ask to use my truck to get 'other' needed essentials when at camp.... you forget something, or worst case have an emergency (like I've had many times!)... and need to get there NOW. Imagine taking your motorhome from camp... leaving everything behind. Or, you're too buried in the camp spot to move... a simple solution is to ALWAYS leave a way out and use a tow vehicle.

It really does depend on what you're going to do with it however... If you like the fact you can drive, drink, eat, and sleep (with a co-driver as an example) all while on the road to your destination... then a motie is the best bet. Especially for long rides. But... if you're going to be somewhere where access to the camp spot is tough (as in sand or other mud or hard to manuever areas) than a tow trailer is much better (IMHO).

Also, if you're to travel alone... or to a camp spot where you're the only one... then, I'd NEVER be with just the motie... I'd def. own the travel trailer and tow vehicle. (or a motie and a towed vehicle). But you can't have the best of both those worlds...

Some of my friends rely on me... to pull them out of sticky situations or for emergencys. Great... but if I'm not around, or someone else is not willing to help... how crappy is that. I'm the type to rely on one person... ME. Another reason I don't drive a motie.

As well I don't have a 5th wheel trailer... If I did, then I wouldn't be able to take my dogs (too comfortably) in the rear of my Excursion with the second A/C cooling them off (like when we're heading to the river in 120 degree heat). If I had a truck... (being able to pull that 5th wheel)... then they'd be in the back seat of the truck. Kind of an issue if you're to take friends or other things that need the A/C.

It's all in what you're to do... and what comforts you'd like. Whether the comforts are for 'in travel' or 'when camped' or BOTH. And with your wife not wanting to tow... maybe having her experience it and trying it would help (thinking she's scared of it and hasn't done it yet)... sometimes moties have more problems with wind and other things than a truck and trailer (esp. your small size of only 26'). And if you're to get a trailer to pull behind... get a small enclosed not a flatbed. That way you can have lockable storage, and weather proof when traveling or at camp.

Good luck, I hope those ideas helped.

Toyhaulers are great if you are going to be arriving at your destination in one days travel time, otherwise you have to unload the ATVs in order to fold down the beds for sleeping room. With a motorhome and enclosed trailer you never have to unload your ATVs at the campground.
