05 Kodiak 400
#1
I just purchased my first atv. I got an 05 kodiak 400. Anything I should keep an eye on. We put 60 miles on it this weekend and it was beginning to squeek somewhere in the back end. I can't hear that particular pitch but my son and his friends could. I read a post in here about a grease zerk being difficult to reach, does this happen to be on the 400 model as well as the 450? It was pretty dusty where we road. Could the brake discs cause this? Any helpful advice will be breatly appreciated.

Yikes. Us too!!! Been a bit annoying also. Three trips to dealer and it appears to be brakes that either have dirt that got glazed on them ot too dusty. Oftem, riding the ATV "with purpose" and using the brakes tends to make it stop. Our keeps coming back. Dealer says there is nothing they can do - its normal. My contention was that if its normal, why dont they all do it. No answer. Anyway, rest assured its seems to be normal, and just brake glaze/dirt. We are going to put on a set of after market pads to see if it helps.

We got little dealer help. Hearing that the load annoying squeal is "As per design" after forking over thousands of dollars to them is not comforting. I dont accept that answer. Now if it sqeeked when I test drove it, and I said thats OK, then that would be a different story. Good luck.

Yeah mine squeaks also. I'm gonna get canton yamaha to check it out when I get it serviced. I went up to beasly ****(blairsville) this past weekend and it was a blast, good hill climbs. But I think I like houston valley(ringgold) just a little better.

Let us know if Service helps. y experience is they "may" shave a little of the rotor off. They will also ride it and use heavy brake action to make the squeak stop. (Then when you get home it starts up again ;^) When we get our aftermarket pads I will post to let you all know if it resolves.

It's NORMAL. it gets a little dirt between the pad and roater an d makes a squeak. Dont know if changing the pad will help. Someone try it and let the rest know. Take your waterhose and give it a good rinising out and it will help until you get it dusty and dirty again. Change your grease zerks to some 90 degree ones. It's impossible to grease using the stock ones.

Thanks for the reply. And for the grease zirk tip - will do that. The reason I dont let this issue die is becuase I know and or have met 5 other Kodiak 400 2005 owners. None of them report that problem. Two of those owners are friends that go riding with us and have gone thru the same muck, dust and mud that we do. Silent as a mouse. Just wondering whats different between ours and thiers. Regardlss, have come to understand its not an issue or something damaging. Just kindo of load and annoying. Friends say they can hear us coming ;^)

From my experience that annoying little noise will fade away. And it only took about 400 miles, and I have not heard it since. I did notice the slower I rode the louder it got. Anything above 20 mph it faded away. Anyhoo good luck with the pads and your dealer!
