Well...with that kind of miles on it, id say it needs a lot of new parts inside. Like piston, rings, maybe even cam, but im not sure. If it smokes, id say it probably is burning oil which i beleive means that the rings are bad (not positive), maybe even the piston wall, which might create your pinging...i think what you need to do is take it to a machine shope, get the piston wall "examined" (Don't know the exact word for it) and they will tell you if there are any scratches and if you need to get it bored out...once this is done, i would get a new piston, new rings, (bored out if needed to)...i don't think you'll need a rod though...and maybe get it ported while your at it. Thats what i think it is, im not 100% positive though. No, i don't think the rod has to be pressed off.

NO the rod is not pressed on just two bolts holding it when u have it apart check the bearings in the bottom end and do your self a favor and buy a repair manual there worth ever dollar and whille u have it apart do your self a favor and replace valves valve guides seals spring and the cam re work the WHOLE!! head it will only cost u about 150 bucks more but will assure you many good years of trouble free use good luck to you.

Well smoking on reving is most likly going to be a worn set of rings. Boring the cylinder would be a good idea! As kinda mentioned above. As for the rattle , Thats a tough one to do since we cant hear it. Pistons and rings usually dont make a rattling noise and neither does anything in the head. Depending on what ya mean by rattle! If everythings working well but smoking on revs . My guess, and i mean guess! On the rattling noise is that it woild be your timing chain. So i would be sure to check it . or make sure its adjusted correctly. So ya can add that to your list of parts. Also check the gears that the chain rides on for wear.

Good luck.............
