Default 500 sportsman dying

I fixed a friends 97 500 sportsman today and it has a problem of dying sometimes when I put it in reverse or the fan kicks on. I replaced the stator, flywheel, coil pulser, recoil,& cdi box because they were bad. It has been setting awhile and the battery is pretty weak could that be the reason its dying? Also they are what looks to be a ground that is not hooked to anything but looks like it would be the right length to connect to the battery ground could this be the cause of it dying?

Well I've been play with it today and if you push the reverse overide in it will not die when you put it in reverse. Also if you push the awd button in and the try to turn it off it will die but if you let out on the awd button real slow it will stay running. I need some help please anyone got any ideals? O yea I also hooked the ground wire that was loose up to the battery ground and it didn't help.

I have a Sportsman 500 also and it went through that. For me the problem was at the very front of the ATV under like the "hood" there is a wiring harness. The charging system is there and one of the wires was rusted and eaten through. I replaced those and its great now... Just a thought
