Lost oil on a '05 sportsman 500
#1
Hi all,
Pretty frustrated right now and need to share. Took the afternoon of work, to work on refurbishing a used trailer for my 3 WEEK old 500 (8.5 hours of running in so far). At the end of the day, I decide to take a quick buzz over to my brother's place for a beverage and some BS. I get about 1/2 way down their 1/4 mile driveway and my machine dies. It just won't start. I look down and see that my oil filler tube is gone (BROKEN OFF) and I think the worst...seized engine. (Well, I got my first tow home with a Honda 3 wheeler and no snickering from my bro' - whew) Not driving anywhere but driveways, it didn't happen today. Yet, I decide to walk over yesterday's travels through the woods, I find an sporatic oil trail from a 4"log on the other end of the field. kinda like trailering a wounded deer.
So, after the tow, I called the local dealer for parts / service work and they're wanting to look at it first before any commitment on claims or warranty work. Parts are said to be less than $100 and will need ordering. I'll drop it off tomorrow and see where this goes. Obviously, I'm hoping it shut down due to low oil pressure and not being seized...
So, anyone have this happen to them ?
How much damage can I expect to the engine short term and long term?
The only positive I can laugh about is that I was thinking of doing my first oil change this weekend...now that it's in the field, I don't have to collect it into a container...

well i am really doubting that there is a low oil pressure shut down....thats too bad cus even briggs and scrap iron have a shut down deal on there small engines when oil runs low...they should have a much better advanced diagnostic system than they do...but if i was you i would try and pull over the engine with the rope to see if the cylinder moves....well just an idea...
