Default 05 TLD engine/tranny whine

Hey all,

Ive been reading the forums for a while and finally picked up a new tld pred. When I was leaving the dealer, the sales guy said I might notice a whine coming from the tranny but thats only from the close ratio gears. I kinda brushed it off in excitement of getting the quad and left. I literally just got home with it and Ive only ridin down the street with it so far. The whine is definetly present. It kinda sounds like a bad bearing of some sort. If I pick up speed and then let off the throttle its more noticeable. Any of you with the TLD have that whine? Im wondering if I should not even ride it tomorrow. If I dont ride it I could just bring it back and get a different one. Id rather not have a brand new quad thats already been ripped apart if there turns out to be a problem.... This kinda sucks. I wish I wasnt so excited to leave the dealer.

I just rode it down the street again. It sounds llike when you drive a manual car in reverse and push in on the clutch. Not a whine but you hear the gears spinning. Im wondering if its maybe a bad chain roller. Its hard to pin point the noise while trying to drive and watch the road. Ill investagate more tomorrow with one of my buddies helpin me. Still if anyone with a TLD can chime in, that would be great.

It's probly the chain roller.....it will quit, mine did. It kinda sounds like a street rod thats gear to gear.

I pick up mine TLD today. i went through the safety test ride. At idle I don't hear not thing. When I was riding I heard the noses. It sound like the tires to me on mine. The gear nose can be over cut gears and it will time to get them wear in. Just make sure you change the oil. Mine TLD was build 3/25/05 it was a Friday. I hope I didn't get a TLD that was put together fast because it is Friday and it the weekend!

Well I had her out on sunday. The noise is noticeable only when your not the one riding it or when you pull in the clutch and let it coast. Something is definetly not right but Im starting to doubt that its coming from inside the tranny. When I got home I changed the oil and rode it up and down my street, shutting off the engine and coasting in neutral. It has to be the bottom chain roller. How much slack is in all of your chains? The top of the chain seems tight but the bottom seems to sag a bit and rub the rear chain guide. Maybe Im way off and the noise is coming from there?

One problem is I have not rode mine yet. Just around the block. The ramps came today and the helemt will be here Wed.
Someone one the predatorowner.com ask the same question. They told him that it was the chain and the noise would go away. It could be the chain thamping but on mine it sound like the tires to me. I will have to get someone else to ride it to see what it is. Mine chain is set to the sticker that is on your sway arm. I was told to the chain should be 1/4 to 3/8 deflection by the rear spocket. If I was you ask on how to adj the chain on this web page. You don't want to snap a chain and kill the case.

Download this 03 predator manual. It could give you so info. I download a 04 and it is very helpful.

I don't now if this is the right thing to do but it has info on adj the rear shock.
