oil grade

Also i was changing the oil in the bottom end on the 300 Fourtrax and i noticed the dealer ( not Honda) gave me 2 liters of 10-W-30 oil to use. Is this o.k for the summer?. I searched all the forums on this and noticed everyone uses at least 10- 40. Thanks.

In my Honda owners manuals, 10W30 covers a range of ambient temperatures from -15 to +30 degrees C (+10 to +90 degrees F). 10W40 has the same temp at the low end, but goes higher at the top end.
If I lived in the frozen north, I would run 5W30 in winter and 10W40 in summer. My personal choice in oils are the ester synthetics like Maxima Extra or Motul 5100. During cold winters, it is especially advantageous to run a synthetic.

Not sure what you mean by "transfer case". On your 300, Honda went for a very low 1st gear, and there is no low range and no transfer case. Your engine oil lubes both your engine and wet clutch transmission.
Get yourself an owners manual, and better yet a shop manual!

Sorry, someone refered to that in another forum as " transfer case". To clarify, There is a 17ml. filler cap on the left side above the shifter. I believe this to be another diff. conecting the front and rear drives. I had another question in another post about the proper type of fluid for this. Thanks.

I have an older 1993 honda fourtrax and regularly use synthetic oil (mobil 1). I regularly
change it once per year during the fall when I spend most of my time on the machine. I normally
run 5W30 because most of my running time is in Maine, and the 10W40 would chill up too much
and cause me to be unable to shift on severe cold days. Usually during startup. Yes you can
use about 6 oz of 10w40 or 30 in your front Diff. It difficult to go with some of the manuals
but for 4x4 its 6 oz. and 2x4 its 3 oz..
