Warn 424 Select installed on my 05 Wolverine
#1
I wanted to start this thread to let people know my first-hand experience with the Warn 424 on my 05 Wolverine.
- The bike is a bit faster in 2wd than in 4wd. I ran my buddy in back to back tests
- Turning radius is GREATLY improved
- Steering is worlds easier now. It's almost too easy
- Before I couldn't do donuts (my buddy could, but he's a much better driver than me). Now I can do donuts at will
- I can power slide at will where before it was a challenge. Roosting, slinging dirt in corners, etc.
- Before I couldn't do a wheelie, and my buddy had a really hard time too. Now I can wheelie... I have to work on my catwalking though
- I can go much faster through the trails, the bike is predictable now.
- A negative is it has MUCH more bump-steer in 2wd. This is expected since only the rear wheels is giving power so the front wheels will bounce around more. It's not a problem since it's very predictable through the bumps.
A Wolverine without the Warn 424 is basically your no-frills, no tricks, ho-hum 4 wheeler. A stock wolvie will tip the rear wheel when you get going too fast in a turn since the outer front wheel would grab. Combine that with a large and IMO unpredictable turning radius, and a stock wolvie isn't very fun to drive on the trails. Hell, it wasn't that fun to drive in the dirt either since you couldn't sling the thing around at will. Doing any tricks is challenging in stock trim.
I was thinking about selling my wolverine because how much it lacked a sporty feel. But the 424 added that dimension to the bike and now I love it! On top of all it's good qualities in stock trim, I'm able to sling it around however I want to. It's so much fun! The bike should come with a selectable 2x4/4x4 from the factory. I thought the 424 would be an improvement, but it completely changed the attitude of the bike. I got mine for $220 shipped from Ebay, so there is no excuse not to get one!

I have pretty much the same thoughts/experiences with my Wolverine before and after the 424. Much sportier in 2wd, although I never really felt the steering was all that heavy before the 424. I also got mine for $220 shipped off of e-bay. Best money you can spend on a Wolverine...

I have had a 424 for a couple years now and I agree with everything you say
except the part about faster on trails in 2wd.
I have done timed runs on several different terrains and the times are ALWAYS
faster in 4wd. With one exception being pavement.
It is more fun in 2wd, but all the time you are spinning, sliding, ect. You are loosing speed.

It will make your wolvie feel alot faster, but if you really test it thoroughly you'll find it's only a little bit faster than before. My testing was done in a drag race on asphalt vs. a Polaris Scrambler 500. As it was stated before, other people have done timed trail rides and found 4x4 was still faster.
It took my father and I 4 hours to install it. It will take moderate skills to get it done. My suggestion is to buy it, read the directions, and make your decision if you want to do it yourself or pay someone else to do it.
Good luck, it's probably the best mod out there for a wolvie. There's nothing like riding in the middle of 2nd gear, kicking the butt around while hitting the throttle, going into easy donuts, steering out of it, and then power sliding to a stop! I also like grabbing the front brake and doing burnouts while in 2x4 Fun, fun, fun!!
