I have the 05 and have run it many times in water up to the seat. The only time I had a problem was not even due to the clutch slipping, it died while submerged, but after draining the water out and regreasing everything it goes great. I bet your clutch cover was not put on right. I'd buy a new seal and put it on carefully.

i have also heard of people taking an OUTERWEARS air filter cover, and cutting it to fit around the clutch housing snorkel opening. since these snorkel openings are particularly low on the scramblers, it wouldnt prevent water totally, but it would help to keep the water from rushing in during a deep water crossing. thus, keeping the clutches dryer for just a bit longer.
if it helps to keep water outta the motor, it oughta do the same fer the clutches.
i havent actually tried this, but the theory seems sound. most outerwears are only $10 anyways. so it seems like its worth a shot.
just some ideas......
