Snorkel: When to do it and how?

Several people on this board have referred to their "snorkeled" machines, which I assume allows it to go through deeper water. What would be the deciding factors as to if you should "snorkel" your machine, and what is involved.

Deciding factor is how deep the water is. If you want to go in water that is deeper than your stock intakes then snorkel them. As far as how, it is different for each four wheeler. What kind do you have?
