sportsman 90 -how bad did we mess this up????
#1
my son went thru about 1 or 2 inches of water and his sportsman 90 died.
the kick starter wouldn't move.
I took the spark plug out and cranked it over with the nut on the crakshaft while flushing out the belt drive with the garden hose.
there was some crunching sonds that i thought was crub in the kicker gears as discibed in an ealier thread i had read.
so, after doing this until it turn over with the electric starter, it started.
it wouldn't idle at all and makes a real bad noise.
I checked the compresion. not good - 30 lbs.
i checked thereed valve and it appeared good.
i'm wondering if i wasted the rings and cylinder.
how can i be sure before i take everything apart?
where can i get a repair manual on this little maching?
and where do you get the parts?
and how do you change belts on these things?
it looks like you would have to split the cases.
wish this could have happened at the end of the season.
the kick starter wouldn't move.

Seems strange that only an inch or two of water would have any affect on the machine.Sure you didn't mean a foot or two?The only thing I can think of is that you ingested some splashed water directly into the air intake.I would pull the head off (only the plastic shroud and 4 nuts) and then you will be able to see the top of the piston and the cylinder walls. The damage will probably be obvious...To change the belt you need to remove the black plastic cover on the left hand side and then remove all the screws holding the side cover on.Use an impact driver and hammer if you don't want to risk stripping the phillips head screws.Once you get the cover off pry open the rear pulley as far as possible and turn the pulley while prying the belt off over the outside edge.It helps if you have the rear wheels off the ground so the pulley can turn easily. You can reinstall the new belt the same way.

I dont think you would have wasted the engine. 30lbs compression would not let the engine run they wont run if less than about 80-90 psi. I would guess the belt came apart take off the left side trans/belt cover I bet you see a mess of broken belt. Probably you need to take out and clean the stator, reedcage, carb, airfilter(probably has mud in it) the carb and reedcage would be first to clean after belt cover. Those motors have enough clearance in them a slight bit of water wont kill them. Many things will reduce the compression reading wet reeds, wet cylinder , etc. was there water coming out of the spark plug hole with the plug out and kicking the motor over slowly. I think you have dirt or water in carb/reeds and stator if the belt , and cvt are all good..

This sounds like the same thing that happened to us after a wet season. The starter gear has some needle bearings and the starter clutch( dont drop any of those three rollers in that starter clutch) that can be damaged when dirty. Also check the starter motor bearing.

o.k. guys,
i checked the belt. if is fine.
i looked a the reeds - i had never seen any before this but they appeared to be in good shape- the reed petals all had nice clean edges and laided flat against the cage.
and it really was 1 to 2 inches not feet of water.
there was water that came out of the spark plug hole when i turned it over. every time i'd put the plug in it and try to start it the plug would get wet so after a bunch of times of that i lifted the back of the quad up, nose down and about an 1/8 to a 1/4 of a cup of water came out. after a while of trying and drying it finally started. sounded bad ran rough won't idle.
i drained the carb bowl - some water there
when this first happened i had thought it shorted out from the water - before i ever thought of kicking it i pulled the starter off and hit the start button and the starter spun and sounded good.
then tryed the kicker and it would not move. even with the plug out.
i pulled the exhaust off and removed the spark plug. with a mirror and a light i could see inside the cylinder and at the side of the piston and rings and all looks great.
where is the stator and how do i clean it?
like i said before the reeds looked good to me but i will pull them back out and swish the block around on solvent to see if that helps.
also does any one know where to get a service manual on these engines?

Polaris dealer or online for the manual. Stator is behind the right side cooling fan and shroud and behind/inside the flywheel. If its firing the stator is ok. Too much water. Take off cyl and piston and check rod etc.

hardwood700,
For many pictures of a Pred-90 stator (which should be the same on your Polaris SP-90), surf many pictures within:

If you did lots of water running in the past, some water "may have" wiggled its way into the factory air box. If you hit 2" of water and by chance, more water got sucked into the factory air box, then lots of water in the bottom of the air box "may have" gotten sucked into the carb. Lots of "bad luck" but it is possible. Once you get all the water out (piston, bottom of engine case, carb, air filter box, etc.), you may want to try adding silicone to the joint of your factory air box. This thin layer of silicone does help reduce water from entering into the air box.
Hope this helps...

To obtain a manual, you could:
1 - Possibly purchase one from your local Polaris Dealer.
2 - Find a manual on E-Bay.
3 - Download a manual from Polaris Web site. Their link is: - Press Here -
Note: You must "sign in" to access their manual download site.
4 - Obtain a manual of a "simular" mini. Many minis use the same or simular parts. For repairs / maintenance, some info in other manuals can be used. For manuals that I often keep local copes of surf:
