JUST BOUGHT 98 XPLORER 400
#1
I JUST BOUGHT IT OVER THE WEEKEND. I COULD NOT PASS UP THE PRICE 3300. IT ONLY HAS 500 MILES ON IT AND IS ALL STOCK. I WAS WONDERING IF ANY ONE COULD TELL ME WHAT THE TOP SPEED SHOULD BE. I HEAR A RATTLE IN THE FRONT RIGHT HAND SIDE WHEN I START TO EXCELLERATE IT GOES AWAY AS SOON AS THE RPM'S GET UP THERE. I THOUGHT AT FIRST IT WAS THE MANIFOLD BUT THAT SEEMS TO BE REAL TIGHT. WHAT ARE SOME MOD'S I CAN DO TO GET THE MOST PREFORMANCE WITHOUT GETTING TO TECHNICAL. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE HELPFUL. THIS IS MY FIRST ATV.

Top speed could be between 60 and 65.(at least in my experience) Good add-ons would be:
-A better air filter (Uni filter is my choice for normal trail riding)
-Change the primary spring for about 25$ gives better acceleration, or add a "whole clutch kit" for added power/performance all around.
-VForce reed valves add a couple H.P.'s to your quad and mine runs smoother with them.
There are probably many more but these are the ones I hear about the most. You should get many more answers to your post. We all love our Xplorers!
Congrats on the new ride!!

The modification you can do that does the most good for the least money is changing the primary spring in the front clutch pulley. You can do it if you can change oil. Take off the footrest & belt cover, zip out 7 bolts, change springs & go all back again. If you want to hear what changing the spring does, read my post titled 'xplorer xperiment (spring change)' or BillCillibiri (Sorry If I mis-spelled your name) has an excellent one titled either 'green spring' or 'green primary spring'. The green spring makes wheelies effortless in low range in good traction conditions without cutting down top speed.
