94 400l starter bendix grinding
#1
I am having a problem with my 94 400l. I believe the Bendix gear is what is the problem, but I am not sure. When I try to start the quad, it makes a grinding noise, so I took the cover off and watched the bendix, it temporarily engages, then begins grinding. The starter is in good condition and seems very pwerful, but the bendix wobbles around inside of the casing, is that normal, or should it be tight inside of there? Sorry for the long post, but I am at my wits end with this.

it will wobble with the cover off becuase it slides into a hole in the cover. check the teeth on the bendix and your flywheel to see if there worn bad or sheared off. if they look good try greasing the bendix. sometimes they get rusty and they don't come out all the way. or the spring could be weak.

Well, I ordered a new Bendix gear. I hope that is what the prob is. I got it of ebay for $45.00. I remembered that before when I would start the engiene, I could hear something rattle for a second after the engiene was running. So, I guess it was the bendix trying to tell me that it was going bad on me. The teeth on it were pretty bad, so I hope I am not wasting $45.00!!! HAHA
