Suzuki KQ vs. Yamaha Grizzly
#1
So, I have heard that Suzuki's fix to the 2005 reverse problem has been to limit the amount of available power while in reverse, and that a timer (60 sec.) has been implemented while using reverse in override mode. I have read where some have said that it is only a temporary solution and that Suzuki is working on a better, more permanent fix. Others have stated that the current fix is what will remain. I have been trying to find information on the Grizzly in such regard. I know that the Grizzly and the KQ are very similar machines, and they are the two that I have narrowed down in my search for a new big bore quad. Does the Grizzly operate in a similar fashion as to how the updated KQ currently works with respect to reverse? Is reverse in the Grizzly limited like it is in the KQ? Does the Grizzly have a timing feature like the KQ? In general, how does the reverse operation compare between the two machines? Which do you believe has the better, more reliable reverse system now? Thanks for any insight anyone would like to share.

both excellent machines the only thing i could say is drive them both see which fits you best. if you want more power go with the king. i have worked on the grizz only because the owner screwed things up and it had to be worked on and wanted an aftermarke exhaust on it so i put in a different jet. well the grizzly was extremely hard to work on. i have no experience with the king quad except that suzuki makes an exceptional atv as does yamaha. like i said the only downfall to yami is that they are difficult to work on. just mean.

The new Grizzly's 05 and up have a reverse override button that allows more power to the reverse gear. You just have to hold down the button. I personally have never used it but I could imagine when you could need it.
Overall I think the Grizz is a great machine. It's not as big/heavy as the 700cc+ machines and it is quick and handles very well.
My best advice would be to test out both and then decide.

grizzlyfd, the 05 griz has a reverse limiter on it? my 04 griz has an override button, but it's for the diff lock. does your griz also have an override for the diff lock or did they get rid of it?
dshoe, my 04 griz goes 10mph in reverse before it hits the limiter

Yeah, gentlemen, I just don't know. It's a very tough decision. I am not going to purchase until right around the holidays, so I still have a little time to decide. Right now, I believe I am ever so slightly leaning more toward the Grizz. I have test driven a Grizz thus far, but I have yet to test drive the KQ (I have drooled all over the KQ though). We'll see...

I just test drove both the Grizz and the KQ on Friday and was much more impressed with the KQ handling. The two really aren't that much different but I liked the shift tree on the KQ better than the Grizz, there's just no way for you not to know which gear you're in. I used to have a Yamaha Big Bear and never had a problem with it, but a buddy of mine convinced me to try the KQ and I was sold. Going to get mine tomorrow!
