i have an 03 ds thats only 6 months old, i have all the mods done to it exhaust, rev box, k&n, and jetted. the problem is that its smoking blue smoke from the exhaust. It does it on accelaration and seems to do it more when its warmed up. I was wandering if anyone else has had this problem? I suspect rings but seems odd on a new machine. it was broken in proper and the valves were adjusted from the dealer after break in. the acceleration and power seems to be just as good as always and there is no hesitation, it runs great except for the smoke. ant help would be appreciated. Stock carb? what your main jet size, might just be way to rich. Is your oil level going down? When does it smoke? at idle,when you ride it or just when reving it out at a stop. I have had a similar problem. How did you get an 03 thats only six months old.

 

Yes stock carb, jet size is 185, oil level drop a little and it smokes on acceration when idle and when riding, also when u let of on throttle it lets out a puff. What problems did you have and how did you fix it. Dealer had 2 brand new 03 still on box.

 

Is that a 185 Mikuni or Dynojet? There is a difference. You shouldn't need anything larger than a 175 Mikuni on the stock carb with your mods.

 

Sound like jetting, Like dsengineer said 175 with your current mods. I was running stock carb, open end cap, no toil filter and no airbox and it ran great at 172.5 thats at 4200ft elevation. At sea level I ran a 180. 185 is probably way to big. What clip is your needle in? Try a 170 main jet with the clip in the middle and go from there. If its lean richen the needle a notch (down). Replace the impossibly hard to get out float bowl screws with S/S allen head screws. It will make rejetting a breeze. Check your float bowl level while your in there also. hope this helps.

The reason I have that jet is because 2 of my friends have ds's and 1 is running a stock carb such as mine and the 2 quads are set up the same, his is an 05 but he did have an 03 like mine and they both run great. My jet is a Mikuni. I am also running with out airbox lid. Thanks

 

Put your airbox lid back on. The stock carb requires a vacum to open the slide.

is it actually BLUE smoke, or BLACK smoke? My exeperiences have showsn that = oil, black = fuel (rich mixture) white = water/glycol (coolant leak) ??

And if your oil level did drop that would also hint to the fact its burning some.

Why would you guys think its jetting? As far as I know running rich wont make you use anymore oil??

I could be wrong, someone feel free to set me straight if I am!

 

Smoke starts out black then its blue and it left a black oily stain on my rear bar. I have the quad at a buddies right now, he knows alot more abot repairing atvs then I do. He pulled the plugs to check compression and found gas in the cylinder so I will pick up differnt jets and try that first, Thanks
