well make sure to be fully stopped before you shift it into reverse and on some bikes you need to put it in neutral before you put it in reverse and well you should get the rpm up to about 3000 before you shift when your engine is reving is you bike semi-auto or does it have a clutch?

My dad has the same quad. You need to be at a complete stop and in neutral before putting it in reverse. When going forward, match your engine speed, gear, and trail condition to the shift points. That is a heavy quad with a smaller engine, so it needs to rev a bit to make speed. If you are 'short shifting' that is, shifting while the engine is turning low rpm's, then you will bog and run out of power quickly. Does that help?

It is an autoclutch. There are actually two clutches, the centrifugal that lets it idle without stalling and the conventional wet multiplate clutch. This is the same same clutch you have with a Japanese dirt bike that has a hand operated clutch with the only difference being that it operates every time the shift lever is pulled or pushed. You can prove this to yourself by letting the machine idle, put it in gear and HOLD THE LEVER whichever way you went to put it in gear. Don't let it fall back to the neutral position. You can rev the motor up because you are holding the clutch in! Now gradually let it go and you are letting out the clutch.
It stands that if you are hammering the shift lever fast you aren't allowing any time for the plates to release and you are being hard on it. Use some feel. Educate your foot.
Learn foot control and understand the clutching that's going on and you can become so proficient and smooth with that shifter that you will amaze yourself.
If you just keep booting it like a football you will just wreck things.
And like they say, let it stop and idle before putting it into reverse.
