my first quad ride on a 200 polaris today- great..

4 questions- (I mean everyone has a first time don't they)

Should I grip the machine with my knees, or let them stick out more?

Should I lean when cornering like rding a 2 wheel bike?

Besides practice, whats the best way to get the hang of the thumb throttle, it was very jerky especially to begin with.

The guy told me the button by my right foot is the brake, if thats the case, whats the control on the left had grip?

Grip with your knees when the goen gets tough, otherwise, ride comfortable.

Same as above - some turns require some lean-in, others do not.

More practice. Your thumb will get used to it after a few rides.

Right foot = rear brake. Left hand grip = also the rear brake. Right hand grip = front brake*
*At least for most ATV's. newer Polaris and Bomb's use a single lever system.

You can use your knees to grip a little bit. I 'push' the quad a little with the outside knee while sliding and such. My quad doesn't have much in the way of fender coverage, the only fairly clean place on the quad after a muddy ride is right where my knees/thighs are up against the plastic. Yes, you need to lean in the turns. Pick up a quad rag at the local supermarket and you can see a ton of pics with riders in proper stance/positioning while riding. You also need to put your weight towards the uphill side of the quad when negotiating hills. Don't worry about the throttle, you'll get it sooner rather than later. The standard for controls is pretty much right hand=front brake, left hand=clutch or rear brake, right foot=rear brake. Polaris uses a linked braking system on many of there quads, but right foot still only controls the rear brakes.

i was brought up on atv's got my first one for my 5th birthday so i guess i learned how to ride aggressive throughout the years. i bought a new atv back in 2002 and i watched the lil training video that they sent with it and i laughed hysterically only because i have ridden for many years. those video's are intended for greenhorns like yourself. take an atv safety course. or if you can take it out to the gravel pits and just puts around in different terrain you will get the feel for your atv quicker that way. and make darn sure that you never overdrive it for your abilities i know it is easy when riding with other people to try to keep up but go at your own pace and you will enjoy and love this sport just like the rest of us.
