CDI question
#1
I am wondering how much difference a CDI makes and which are the best bang for the buck. I know that most will give an additional 1000 rpm, give a more powerful spark, and advance the timing, although I'm no mechanic and don't know if that is always a good thing or is advancing the timing a disadvantage in some situations. I've heard claims that it will give an additional 3hp. I know some can be adjusted by just a switch to give more low or midrange etc.
I have a 2003 Z400 with a Yoshi comp full pipe, K&N w/outerwear (airbox lid off), dyno-jet kit. Is anyone running a similar setup that has added a CDI afterwards? What kind of difference/powergains did you notice? Some say you must have a fully charged battery or it won't start. Has anyone had problems with that?
Any advice from personal experiece would be appreciated.

on a slightly tuned motor you wont notice much except for a higher rev
I run a dyna cdi and it made a world of difference for me
if your looking to buy one try rockymountainatv.com.
they're located in payson, ut. very close to you

Thanks, the higher revs would help. The first time I took it out to the dunes after adding the pipe/jets etc. I thought I needed to adjust the jetting some more, then I realized I was hitting the rev limiter since it revs so much faster now.
Yah, Rocky Mountain is great, I've bought most of my stuff from there. They almost always have the lowest price, and even when they don't it's only a couple bucks diff. They are less than 15 min from my house.

What jetting do you have with your setup? I have a semi-similar setup, i have a DJ155 Main jet, 25 Pilot jet..
Thanks,

Dyna just came out with a non-adjustable cheaper version. I would buy that one if I had to do it over, because I never change mine. On a stock engine I dont think you would notice much other then a higher rev limiter.
Hotcams would give more bang for the buck ($240 from woodward specialties.com). But then you would want a CDi to raise the rev limiter.

I am in the exact same boat as you and have asked this same question recently. My mods are similar to yours.
I am going with the Alba Racing CDI that is only $90.00, you gain 1000 RPM's and a lot of top speed. But dont expect better acceleration. It is a wast of money to buy a top of the line CDI for a mildly tuned machine like ours. Go with the Alba CDI.
Check it out on www.albaaction.com.
Hope this helps.

From what I have read, all of the cheap ones (white bros, alba ect...) are made by Procom they just put their name on them. I have heard of them giving as little as 300 extra rpms over the stock rev limiter.
Dyna, vortex, and Yoshi are not made by procom. Yoshi doesnt adjust the timing curve, dyna and vortex do.

Hey ThaChad, I can't remeber the exact jet size but I think it is like a 145 or 147 but I'm assuming your elevation is much lower which is why you would be running a larger main jet. My pilot jet is stock (I'm not sure what size it is) and I have the needle clip on the 2nd clip. The dunes I ride the most are at about 5,000 feet and based on the little bit of riding I've done since adding everything the jetting seems to be right on (no hesitation or stalling/stumbling, backfiring etc.)
