Slip on Looks like a fuel module like a Dobeck will be needed if mods are to be done to be felt.

I think, could be wrong, that the backfire screen is the factory spark arrestor.

I agree, they're just referring to a spark arrestor, or sparky as some call them.

How much horsepower do the new 686's really have?. Accoring to that dyno it said 36 [about the same as the 660], but i realize it was not fully broken in and was running on slicks. So it must be low 40's right?

I don't see how the ECU can adjust for the addition of a pipe or removing the Air box lid with out an 02 sensor? I am no expert on EFI but I know on my 700 when I removed the air box lid and the baffle out of the stock muffler I felt a hell of a difference in power but I also felt the engine was quite lean and the exhaust temps were very high. I ordered a power commander III which just became ava. I don't want to take any chances. The info I have read in the magazines has not always been 100% I'd hate to see someone melt a piston or stick a valve open because they thought the ecu was self learning . As I understand it it can run 10 to 15% either way to compensate for altitude changes and that's about it. Every engines fuel requirments will be a little different and with mods if you have one that was close to perfect before the mods (a little on the lean side) and now you put a slip on and a high flow filter on it and no longer run the air box lid
then you very well could run into a serious lean condition and start doing internal damage or at best you have wasted a lot of money without getting the full potential of your mods. Thats just my opinion on it.

Actually it was running on the stock rear tires as I understand it. You will pick up quite a bit with slicks on the chassis dyno due to the increased contact patch on the rollers. I would be willing to bet on a fully broken in machine with a high flow air filter no air box lid and a good slip on with a custom fuel map the 700R will be sneaking up on 50 HP which I think is great for a bolt on machine. I believe the stock HP rating to be around 42HP

As soon as I get all the above mentioned Mods I will be borrowing a set of slicks from a fellow PSAR member and heading to our local Yamaha dealer which has a Dyno Jet chassis dyno and all the lastest power commander software to create custom fuels maps to optimze
whatever mods one might have. When I am done I'll share my results with you all. This probabley won't happen till the beggining of OCT due to the lack of avalibility of parts for now.

RaptorRandy27,

Hummmm, that October date is a couple weeks before the big Florence trip, maybe you need to run down there and join in on the fun, show them what a properly tuned 700R will do

Hap, the wife and I have been talking about that. We had a trip to ST anthony planned for the middle of Oct. but I don't know if that will pan out this year so we may do Florence. We will Hotel it and drive out to the staging area every morn. That worked well for us at Winchester a couple of weeks ago. With all the money I been throwin at quads and mods this year I don't need to spend the money on the St Anthony trip. Hopefully I'll have all the mods and tuning done on the 700R before the florence trip. I couldn't wait to ride it any longer so I took it for a good ride on the power lines up here yesterday and I must say so far I'm real impressed with the 700. The things just plain fun to ride
